Don't ask why but today I wrote a eulogy for Mr. Rodgers. Read on if you would like.
Viewed for years and by millions as the kind neighbor just up the street Fred Rodgers exhibited a kindness rarely seen in single AARP members. He had a fondness for cardigans, lounge shoes, trains and puppets which only increased his appeal to young children, but as the years passed his charismatic style was questioned by those very people who, as children, had sat glued to their black and white tv sets as he entered the magical land of Kings and talking tigers. What was he hiding under his cardigans? What sort of place was in he before coming home that made his sweaters so dirty that he needed to change them when he got home? His integrity and forearms were called into question but those who believed in the magic of public television continued to believe in the goodness of the "neighbor next door". Rumors and suspicions cannot diminish what the man did in bringing joy to millions of children and providing a half hour of relief to stressed young mothers everywhere. We salute you Mr. Rogers. May you rest in peace in your magical neighborhood in the sky.
